Don't get lost in the growing pile of SSD applications

The number of workers receiving Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits has increased considerably in the past three years. A record 5.4 million people who can no longer work have enrolled in SSD. This growth has been accompanied by a reduction in SSD agency, straining an overburdened system even more.

It's tax season once again and time to figure out what you owe Uncle Sam. One of the first steps in figuring out your tax liability is to calculate the portion of your income that is actually taxable. Some taxpayers make the mistake of assuming that their federal benefits, such as Social Security Disability (SSD), are not taxable. And this may be true at the state level - some states do not tax federal benefits such as SSD. However, SSD is definitely subject to federal income tax if you meet the criteria

Disabled? A Veteran? You may be entitled to SSD benefits

If you are a disabled veteran who receives VA compensation benefits, you may also be entitled to Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. Neither the SSD benefit nor the service-connected VA disability benefit can be reduced by the other if you are eligible for both. Veterans' disability benefits and SSD are two separate programs with different eligibility criteria.
