Diabetes and Social Security Disability Benefits

Since 1982, November has been designated National Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is believed to affect the lives of 26 million children and adults and is listed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) as a qualifying condition for disability benefits (SSD).

Social Security pays benefits to those disabled by HIV/AIDS

December 1 is World Aids Day. It is important to remember that despite improvements in treatment, HIV/AIDS is a lifelong illness that can prevent people from working or carrying on the activities of daily living. If you or someone you know cannot work because of HIV/AIDS, Social Security Disability (SSD) may be an option. This program pays monthly benefits to people who are unable to perform substantial gainful work because of illness or injury, and HIV/AIDS is included in the list of covered conditions.

Young Onset Parkinson's and SSD

A November 16 conference, Midwest Young Onset Parkinson's Conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio, reminds us that Parkinson's disease is not limited to older people. Although the average age of onset is 62, some people under 50 develop disease symptoms as well. The course of the disease is different, but the disabling nature of the illness whatever the age of onset is undisputed.

COPD and SSD

November is COPD Awareness Month. COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is an illness that gets worse over time and makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. It also results in wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. The term covers two primary conditions - chronic or acute bronchitis and emphysema. In the United States, around 14 million people have been diagnosed with one of the forms of COPD.
