Lupus and Social Security Disability Benefits

Lupus is an autoimmune disease with an unknown cause and a wide range of symptoms. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, at least 1.5 million people have the disease and around 16,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. However, many cases of Lupus may go undiagnosed and untreated for some time because many of the symptoms mimic those of other illnesses.

The most common symptoms of the disease are:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Painful joints
  • Unexplained fever
  • Anemia
  • Swelling in hands, feet and face
  • Pleurisy
  • Rash
  • Sun sensitivity
  • Hair loss
  • Clotting abnormalities
  • Nose and mouth ulcers

Symptoms such as these characterize other illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease and blood, thyroid, heart, lung and bone disorders. Because of this, Lupus is sometimes referred to as the "great imitator."

Lupus can be mild or can result in death, depending on how it affects the body. Many people with Lupus try to work only to find that they cannot. People with Lupus who find themselves in this situation may be eligible for Social Security Disability (SSD)

Because Lupus is sometimes mistaken for other illnesses, it is important to have full documentation of your diagnosis and treatment when applying for SSD. Even when patients think they are providing all required paperwork, they may run into trouble with their benefits claim.

If you have been denied disability benefits for Lupus, do what so many others have done. Contact Binder & Binder®, America's most successful Social Security Disability advocates. Tell them your story and find out how they can help you get the benefits you need and deserve.
