Get Help if Your Social Security Disability Benefits Stopped

social security card.jpgSometimes the Social Security Administration (SSA) appears to do things for no reason. Recipients of the SSA's arbitrary behavior can be left without social security disability benefits, health coverage and the ability to take care of themselves - all for no reason that anyone can see.

Take the case of a woman in western Pennsylvania. She has used a wheelchair since 1994 after a car accident left her paralyzed from the chest down. Since then, she has been getting Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, most recently around $1,000 per month. She even received a 1.5 percent cost of living increase in January.

But a couple of weeks ago she received a letter from the SSA saying that she was no longer disabled and that her SSD benefits had ended. In addition, she was informed that she owed the government more than $74,000 within the next 30 days to pay back the benefits she had received in the past. Her access to Medicare was cut off. And she is still paralyzed, using a wheelchair every day. Nothing has changed.

A local TV station quoted her as saying, "I don't know if my name just came up and they looked at it and said, 'She's not disabled anymore, she doesn't qualify'" If that's a mistake then I hope they want to fix it."

However, the SSA doesn't seem to be in any hurry to address the problem. The woman filed an appeal online and made numerous phone calls, but received no response from the Social Security Administration. She has been forced to pay for her medical care and prescriptions out of pocket. Even in the few weeks that she has been without benefits, she has paid out many hundreds of dollars.
