Efforts to Dismantle Social Security Disability, Part 1 of 2

There's been a lot of negative press recently about the so-called problems with Social Security Disability (SSD). The allegations include:

· The fund will run out of money very soon. How soon is not always clear, but one thing is part of every argument: The financial problems of SSD are intractable and cannot be solved. According to the naysayers, the only solution is to alter the system drastically.

  • The reason SSD is going to run out of money is the vast number of claimants who are trying to cheat the system.
  • The reason SSD claims take so long to be approved is that vast numbers of people who are not really disabled apply for disability benefits, clogging the system and hurting those who are among the so-called deserving.
  • Those who run the disability insurance system are somehow corrupt, especially administrative law judges whose track records include high appeal approval rates. In contrast, those judges whose appeal approval rates are extraordinarily low are somehow heroes.

There are other accusations against the SSD system and the workers who apply for and receive SSD benefits when they can no longer work due to illness or injury. The allegations vary, but common threads include recipients who are undeserving and social needs that cannot and should not be met by the government. What receives far less attention is the way that the current Congress has tried to cripple the SSD system in order to support its contention that the current disability insurance program is broken and cannot be fixed.

The result of efforts to hobble the agency's ability to provide benefits in a timely way means that the disabled have increasingly long waits, waits that they can ill-afford. If your claim for SSD benefits has become bogged down in the system, it is important to get help making your case. Do what so many others like you have done: Call Binder & Binder®, America's most successful Social Security Disability advocates. Tell them your story and find out how they can help you get the disability benefits you need and deserve.

This is the first in a two-part blog post about how cuts to the Social Security Administration budget make it difficult for the agency to serve elderly and disabled people who are the SSA's clients.
