Common Causes of Disability: Arthritis

stethoscope.jpg According to the website webmd.com, Americans have a one in three chance of becoming disabled before they retire. Common causes of disability include:

  • Arthritis and other musculoskeletal problems
  • Back pain
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Oepression
  • Diabetes

Our next few blog posts will provide more detail about each of these conditions.

Arthritis

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that about one-third of the U.S. population says that arthritis affects their ability to work to some degree. About 52.5 million people have "self-reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis." Another 22.7 million have limitations attributable to arthritis. There are about 100 forms of this disease.

Around 40 percent of those with arthritis report that they cannot do at least one important function of daily life. These include:

  • Grasping small objects
  • Reaching above the head
  • Sitting more than two hours
  • Lifting or carrying 10 pounds
  • Climbing a flight of stairs
  • Pushing a heavy object
  • Walking one-quarter of a mile
  • Standing more than two hours
  • Stooping, bending or kneeling

Arthritis is worse if you are overweight, but if you can't move very well, being overweight is almost a given.

The CDC estimates that by 2030, 67 million people - 25 percent of the projected population - will have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. Most of these will be women. Arthritis will continue to be a major source of disability in the foreseeable future.
