Common Causes of Disability: Diabetes

According to the website webmd.com, Americans have a one in three chance of becoming disabled before they retire. Common causes of disability include:

  • Arthritis and other musculoskeletal problems
  • Back pain
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Depression
  • Diabetes

This is the last in a series of blog posts about common causes of disability in the United States.

Diabetes

In 2012, 9.3 percent of the population (29.1 million) was living with diabetes. These figures include 8.1 million people who were undiagnosed. Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in 2010. There were 86 million Americans with prediabetes in 2012. There were 79 million in 2010.

There are significant variations in the rates of diabetes among different ethnic groups in the U.S. American Indians have the highest rates of diabetes. Chinese-Americans have the lowest.

Diabetes can result in other significant health problems. Heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, blindness and amputations are some of the complications or conditions associated with diabetes at higher rates than in the general population.

The financial impact of diabetes is considerable. In 2012, the cost of diabetes was estimated to have been $245 billion. Average medical expenditures for people with diabetes were 2.3 times higher than they would have been without diabetes.
