SSA's Backlog Grows--What Can You Do?

They often say a picture is worth a thousand words--so, let us paint the picture for you: the Social Security Administration is behind on processing disability claims. Not just a little bit, either. Currently, their average processing time is 491 days.  

You read that right--491 days. Last year, the average processing time for a disability claim was 422 days. According to data recently released from the Social Security Administration, the backlog of disability claims has grown by 60,000 since then start of their fiscal year in October of 2014. The growth in the backlog can likely be tied to the nearly 70-day increase in claim processing, but the bottom line remains the same: disability claims are taking longer and longer to receive decisions.

Many individuals applying for Social Security Disability have little to no income--after all, they are unable to work. Waiting nearly a year and a half the Social Security Administration to process their claim puts them into financial distress. As the average processing time for a disability claim continues to grow, disability applicants continue to suffer.

What can you do about this?  We suggest that you contact your congressmen or congresswomen. Let them know that this is unacceptable, and something needs to be done to ensure that disability claims are being processed in a reasonable and timely manner.  

A few tips for your communication to your representative:

 

  •        Make your communication brief and well prepared. Be sure to include personal experiences that might be relevant (how long have you been waiting for a decision on your disability claim?).

  •       Please do not bring up other issues. Stick to the topic at hand.

  •       Do not use profanity or insults. Keep your correspondence professional and respectful.
