A question we hear often from clients and potential client: "What am I supposed to do for income if I am disabled and can't work, and how am I supposed to pay my bills?"
The truth is unfortunately simple: there is no easy answer, and it can potentially be a very difficult and trying time while waiting for a disability claim to be approved. We often encourage clients to seek out help from family members when possible, and look into public assistance if and when they qualify. Even still, it can be difficult to make ends meet-especially when the time frame for disability decisions can take longer than two years.
A Possible Loss of Assistance
A recent article released by the Associated Press has revealed that some individuals seeking both disability benefits and public assistance in the form of food stamps may soon be struggling even more than before. According to the article, "more than 1 million low-income residents in 21 states could soon lose their government food stamps if they fail to meet work requirements that began kicking in this month."
This provision will apply to able-bodied adults, ranging from 18 to 49 years of age, who do not have dependents in their home. They would be required to work, volunteer, or attend educational courses at least 80 hours a month in order to receive assistance in the form of food stamps. If unable to meet the requirements, they would be cut off from their food stamp benefits.
Until an individual is found disabled by the government and awarded disability benefits, they are still considered able-bodied and could risk losing access to food stamps-even in the midst of an often long and difficulty disability claim. Those who are technically considered able-bodied stand to lose an often much-needed benefit, even though they are unable to work due to a disability and an unsettled disability claim.
